Dukey Shoots for The Doors

Late audition falls short for the L.A. Woman Man

It was mid to late ’80s, as Dukey remembers it, and there were auditions at The Whiskey a Go Go for the role of Jim Morrison in The Doors movie in Hollywood. He’s not quite sure where he had been with Buck and Cohey, but he thinks maybe they were at some Ram’s game in Anaheim or maybe it was an L.A. Traitors game. They blasted in for the audition late and were told it was too late. The last group was up on the stage. Dukey acted quick and jumped up on the stage and the casting people gave him a shot. Old Jimmy’s voice was right in Dukey’s key and he belted out a few notes. Not sure what song it was. Maybe “5 to 1.” Dukey talked with some of Morrison’s relatives about Jim’s life. They liked what Dukey had done, but he guessed that Ollie — as in Stone — knew Dukey didn’t have the Morrison look. Killed by Kilmer who won the role!
